I was recently working with a VA who was trying to get some content up on her blog and website, as she was starting to network with potential clients. I suggested that she populate her new blog with a few posts so that when people showed up to check her out, she wouldn’t look quite so brand new.
She was stuck because she said she didn’t know what to write about.
This is a common stopping place for VAs – not knowing what to write on your blog.
We often don’t see our own value and we think, ‘What could I possibly write about that would interest anyone?’
So I decided to put together a quick list of some content ideas for you.
First thing to remember is that you are an expert in the VERY THING that your clients will hire you for, so you want to start there.
You want to put a mix of content on your blog – so you don’t want it all to be about the same subject. Using the list below, I’m sure you can come up with 10 posts easily. π
Start by writing three points for each article – and then expand those into short paragraphs. Find an image to go with it, be sure to put in a call to action at the end of your post, and you will be off and running in no time!
1. Write a review on a software or service that you use.
When you set up your business, you should do an inventory of the services and platforms that you are using. This is a good place to start writing. Whether you use Microsoft Office, or Zoho Projects, or Dropbox, write a few short lines about what you like about each of these services. Write down the things you don’t like. Write down why.
2. Talk about a customer service experience you have had.
Everyone is involved in customer service when they leave their house. Recognize when you are out somewhere, how you get treated. Write about the good, the bad, or even the funny! Compare it to your business if you like, or just let your personality shine through.
3. Write about something newsworthy.
Inviting conversation is much easier when you talk about current events. Give your perspective on a current news item, or on someone else’s article. Make sure to link to the other person’s article if you refer to them.
4. Answer questions that you have been asked about your area of expertise.
Use real questions you have received, or ones that you have seen on forums or social media. If you see a great question that you know how to answer, highlight that on your own blog.
5. Interview someone, or highlight someone on your blog.
If you are reaching a particular target market, highlighting some people you are working with or who you have come into contact with through networking, is a great way to show people that you are connecting with others. Interview someone who you have worked with, about how they use a VA. Interview someone about how their client cycle operates. The possibilities for interviews are endless.
6. Write a how to article.
Step by step how to information is always a great topic. When people are seeking out experts in a particular field, this can be a great way to showcase what you know. Use images or video to really make your how to simple and come across clearly.
7. Write something personal.
You don’t always have to write about business! When people are hiring you, they are hiring your personality also. If you go on a family vacation or have a fun experience somewhere with friends, that can be great content for your blog too (occasionally!)
8. Make a checklist.
Another great way to showcase your expertise. Let someone know what they need to know to do something. There is nothing like providing people with a bit of education in your blog posts, to keep them coming back for more. It can be simple or complex, but you will see that these get great reception from those who read them.
9. Do a demo.
Whether you use a particular software or if you just want to do a simple video on how to set up a Google account, a demo is a great way to have your blog post appeal to people. You can use video, images or powerpoints to do demos effectively. These can be addictive. Once you do one, you can see the value you are providing to people. I can promise you, you will want to do more. π
10. Announce an event or talk about an event.
This can be an event you have attended (yours or someone else’s). Another timely kind of post is to talk about an upcoming event, or an event you have recently attended. Providing your point of view on how things went can be insightful to those who are getting to know you.
So you can see, these are 10 really easy ways to develop some interesting and engaging content for your blog.
One last point, is to go and look at other people’s blogs as well – and leave comments on them when you find an article you like. You will get comments back on your own blog posts sooner when you are actively commenting on blogs yourself.
Look around some more on my blog, and feel free to leave your comments on any of the posts that inspire you. Don’t forget to leave your website or blog URL as well – I’d be happy to leave you my comments as well!Β
