Good clients are NOT hard to find.
Whether you have lots of clients, or are still looking for that elusive first one, it is important that you find GOOD clients.
The backbone of any business is clients. Without clients you have no revenue … you have no business.
And frankly, life is too short to work with clients that you don’t like or who stress you out.
Look at your client list right now. Do you love each person you work with? What do you like about them? Is it the work you do for them? Their personality? The rate they pay you?
Be honest with yourself and really determine what makes a GREAT client for you.
It may not be the same as what makes a great client for someone else.
If you don’t have any clients yet, then brainstorm who you want to work with – the type of person, the work they need done, the rate they will pay. It’s the same exercise whether you have clients or not.
- Be choosy. Not all clients are great.
- Don’t work with just anyone. Not everyone is a good fit for you.
- Be the best that you can be to attract the best clients you can.
In this Back to Basics training session, we talk about the wrong way to get clients, and the right way to get clients:

And we also cover the basic marketing that you need to do:
- Decide what your specific service offerings will be.
- Determine what your pricing structure will be.
- Determine your billable rates for every task you will provide service for.
- Develop a solid marketing message* – be clear!
- Put together an online presence that showcases your business.
- Always carry business cards and hand them out!
Once you get these basics in place, then it’s time to get the word out.
So who do you connect with? Everyone you know! But do your homework first.
Figure out what makes a great client for you.
Develop a marketing message that speaks to them.
Get in touch with them.
Honestly … it’s really that simple.
If you are stuck without clients that you love, that pay you well, and that have you doing work you really enjoy, then it’s time to get some help to recreate this part of your business.
You are the CEO … make some decisions and I promise you, you will start to love your business again!
I’d love to hear your comments on this topic – post them below!
This is such a great training Tracey. There are so many distractions about marketing to get clients. The personal connecting that you described in this training is spot on and the most effective to get clients quicker.
Thanks Geniece! I appreciate that, and you are correct – personal connections may seem like they take more time, but they are SO much more effective. Thanks! 🙂
